John Coltrane - Sun Ship
In 1965, John Coltrane could do no wrong. As amazing as his career was, this is for me the peak of his creativity. All of the albums recorded this year has stood the test of time, and now nearly 50 years later, they still sound fresh and are cornerstone albums in music history.
Sun Ship was one of the last albums recorded by the classic John Coltrane Quartet. These sessions took place in august of ‘65, and by january of 1966, both McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones had quit. Sun Ship is also a bit forgotten in the vast Coltrane discography and should definitely be higher up on the list of his greatest albums.
The total frenzy and spiritual performance on this album, and in this year is breathtaking. If you don’t like this, you don’t like music.
Recorded in 1965, but not released until 1971. This is the original US pressing released by the mighty Impulse! Records.
